A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a network technology that gives users a secure private connection to their own personal or business network from any available Internet connection.  This connection occurs in a password encrypted "tunnel" so that all communications along the public Internet space are kept confidential.

Examples:

Frank owned a small company and often found himself traveling for business. He wanted to be able to work from his hotel room or even the airport.
