A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a network technology that gives users a secure private connection to their own personal or business network from any available Internet connection.  This connection occurs in a password encrypted "tunnel" so that all communications along the public Internet space are kept confidential.

Examples:

Frank owned a small company and often found himself traveling for business. He wanted to be able to work from his hotel room or even the airport. He had Good Electrons help him setup a VPN solution so that he could he could access his network servers and keep on top of orders while he was on the road.

Sally didn't have to worry about whether or not her children would behave with the new babysitter.  She had Good Electrons install a VPN with a security camera system and now she can watch her house from anywhere in the world!
